Agent of Love and Exams, the pretty sailor suited soldier Sailor Mercury!

This is a post about a bra.

I grew up with the English dubbed version of Sailor Moon. It was my favourite show and I would watch it endlessly. This was before we could download shows or stream them. I taped tons of Sailor Moon and ran home at various time from school to watch. I was 15/16 when I first started watching. We got the internet around the same time and I discovered that the English dubbed version was pretty different from the Japanese version. Eventually I read the manga and got to watch the Japanese version. I bought Sailor Moon everything and became a hardcore fan.

At 15/16, I bought all of the Sailor Moon mini palaces including the larger moon kingdom palace above. Little chibi Sailor Scouts were a favourite of mine. Sadly, I have nothing left from this era. I loved this stuff, though.

I wasn’t a popular kid growing up. I was a bookworm. Naturally, Sailor Mercury was my favourite. She could kick ass and still get her assignments in on time.

There’s something about the Sailor Scouts for me. The idea of being a young woman and being assertive and strong resonated with me. The show gave me a lot of strength and repaired a lot of my feelings about vulnerability. I wasn’t going to be the victim anymore. I started standing up to bullies and really became the strong woman I am today.

I have been watching the new Sailor Moon Crystal series. I actually really love it. I’m not that far in, though, because the wedding distracting me. I need to catch up!

The bra’s colours instantly reminded me of Sailor Mercury along with the oversized bow. I named her Sailor Mercury and she’s a beauty and strong. I put the bigger bra lower so it wouldn’t be bumpy under whatever dress I am wearing.

This is my best fitting bra yet. I will be tweaking the fit a bit more and more as I make more, but I’m pretty satisfied with this one. It’s super comfortable to wear and has a nice shape and lift.

I’ve gotten mostly rid of the bulk problem in the bottom seam. There is the tiniest of bumps left. I’m going to ask about sheer nylon stabilizers when I am at Bra-Maker’s Supply in a couple of weeks. This should help reduce the bulk in the seam, but make sure I still get the appropriate support.

For this bra, I increased the lower cup a little more and increased the bottom seam of the upper cup. The seam between the two lower cups now sits where it should at the apex. Before the seam wasn’t quite there and definitely contributed to an odd shape. I think for the next one I will increase the upper cup just slightly, because there is still a tiny bit of flatness in the seam between the upper and lower cups. I also increased the band by a little more than a 1/4 on each side. A little bit more than a 1/2 inch in total. I can’t quite remember the amount to be honest. That’s why I am being vague. That was just enough to make it a lot more comfortable for me. My other two are a little bit too tight. I can wear them okay, but after a day my sides pinch a little bit. This one, though, perfection. A bra should be so comfortable that you barely notice that you have it on.

I did a much better job with the straps and hook and eye than I have in the past. The stitching is still not perfect and my machine skipped a couple of stitches, but it’s getting there! They look kind of wonky in the picture above and don’t appear to sit correctly, but on me they scoop perfectly down to the hook/eye and sit very flat. I don’t think I will be working up my nerve to show you a picture of me in these bras. My day job would have a fit about that if it ever got back to them. The back looks great, though, take my word for it.

I did a much better job of making the bridge look nice at the top of the cups. I extended the channeling and used that to cover the raw edges. It also nicely lends a bit more structure to the lace at the top and will help it last.

I also lined the lace! I used stretch mesh with spandex from BMS. It’s definitely going to preserve the stretch lace.

Speaking of the lace, I took the lace off of a nightgown that I had used for a cosplay project last year. The upper part of the nightgown wasn’t needed so I cut it off. The large bow also comes from the nightgown. I made the smaller bows on the straps using the fork method.

The teal blue fabric is duoplex and the band is white power net. Elastic findings are a kit. All these are from BMS.

The insides of my bras are starting to look at lot better. I would still like a way to make the raw edge of the lace look better though. I will be asking about that at BMS.

The final touch I made for this bra was to officially make it Sailor Mercury:

On the right strap at the back, I embroidered a tiny Sailor Mercury symbol to let my geek subtly shine through. Now I have to make sure my strap is showing! 😉

This is my favourite bra yet. I’ll probably be saying that for sew many bras in the future! I have planned out three more bras in terms of fabric combinations and named two with the help of Instagram! I need your help for the last one. 🙂

Update: The name was randomly chosen! Thanks Nicole for Desert Sunset. 🙂

It’s Lingerie Month over at the Sewcialists blog. Will you be taking part and posting your project to the flickr group for the round up post? I’m definitely posting this!

  1. Beautiful bra- and I’m excited to see the future versions as well! I really need to make a few more bras soon, due to various factors I’m down to about two that I wear most days and thats not enough! I wanted to ask about the elastic you are using for the bottom of the band- are you happy with it? it sounds like its from BMS? I’ve gotten all my finding so far from Sew Sassy and the only thing I haven’t been too happy with is how quickly the elastic for the bottom of the bands is wearing out, its has started folding/rolling a bit and just looking generally worn. The stretch it has is also a little strange. It just isn’t the same quality as what I would get in RTW bras, and I definitely wasn’t buying super high quality RTW! Do you like what you have used?

    1. Thanks so much, Megan! Yep, my band elastic is from BMS. There are two different varieties of band elastic at BMS. One has a scalloped edge and the other has a picot edge to it. I’m not a fan of the picot edge one as it rolls and folds and is generally not able to withstand the wear. The scalloped edge one is fantastic. I think it’s higher quality and also there is less stretch to it. I think you want a band elastic that is pretty firm to avoid the rolling and folding. I definitely recommend the scalloped edge elastic. When I go there in a couple of weeks, want me to pick up some and send it to you for you to try out? What colour would you like?

      1. Thanks Andie, that would be SO AWESOME!! I’m glad to hear you are happy with that elastic as I have been dragging my feet on making more bras. Most of the other notions I have are holding up really well, but not that bottom band elastic. I agree with you, that is the most important elastic! Black or white would work well for me, I have stashed plenty of other notions in those colors 😉 Shoot me an email if/when you are able to pick some up and we can work out details!

      2. I’ll put it on my list to get! 🙂 I’ll email you for the details once I have it. 🙂

  2. Who would ever have thought I’d be reading so closely and nodding along to the fit changes as you describe your bra? 5 years ago I would have thought that was crazy. Now I’m loving it! Sewing, you make everything so interesting!

    1. 5 years ago I would have thought bramaking was a crazy concept! I’d literally just visited an actual bra shop and got my actual size. So, the idea of even a nicely fitted bra was a weird concept to me at the time, too! Now having bras that aren’t a million dollars?! And in pretty colours?! Past me would think I was crazy. 😉

  3. I love the tiny embroidered Sailor Mercury symbol Andie!!
    It makes it so personal!
I would call this last one the “The Purple Rose”
Do you usually go to BMS?? I would love to meet you there for one of the workshops!!

    1. Thanks so much, darling. 🙂 Thanks for the name suggestion. 🙂 I think I’m going to put a few in a hat on the weekend and decide randomly. 😀

I don’t get out to BMS as much as I would like, but if you were in town for a workshop, I’d be there in a heartbeat to meet you in person! 😀

      1. 🙂 That would be awesome!
        I’ll let you know then!
I was thinking to either plan for a workshop at BMS or just a trip to Toronto.
I’ll let you know in any case. 😉

  4. The last one reminds me a lot of Rose Tyler’s color combinations, specifically her blue leather jacket/purple tee combo in Journey’s End. Power mesh is the best. I love it for lining knit tops…it’s so strong and lightweight, really the best of all possible fabric worlds.

I’ve not seen Sailor Mercury, but one of my good friends in college loved Sailor Moon. Thanks for reminding me of her! Now I can see the more turquoise. It’s beautiful, and it has to be gratifying to be at a point in your bramaking exploits that everything is gorgeous AND fitting well.

    1. Thanks so much, Elizabeth!

OOoh, oh, oh! Now I am crying thinking of that episode. 😥 I’m going to put the name suggestions in a hat and choose randomly. Journey’s End for your pick? Or Rose?

Sailor Mercury is one of Sailor Moon’s scouts. 🙂 She’s the “smart” one of the bunch, but really I think she is the heart. ❤

  5. I have seen your lingerie over on IG quite often- I think you make some amazingly beautiful things! The Sailor Moon name is perfect for that color… I have a bra kit. I just have not taken the plunge yet. Ive done a lot of reading though. I will definitely come back for tips when I am ready!

    1. Thanks so much, Laurie. 🙂 🙂 You’re too sweet. 🙂 Whenever you get started, I’m definitely here for help. 🙂 I can’t wait to see your first one!

  6. Gorgeous! And that tiny little embroidery is so cute – nice touch. I’m excited to start my bra making class next week, all this internet bra making is so inspiring!

    1. Thanks so much, Chloe! I’m so excited that you are taking the class!! Are you doing the boob camp? I really wanted to do that the first time, because you get so much more instruction and by the end can have some really lovely and creative bras after the first white one. I can’t wait to see what you make!

  7. Absolutely love this! I was a HUGE sailor moon fan as a kid- (my fav was sailor jupiter =^.^= )!! Love love love the inspiration and I’m so happy that you’re getting closer and closer to your perfect fit! I don’t think the tweaking ever stops! – I’m not sure about the name for your new bra- ‘twilight garden’ instantly popped into my mind because both colours are flowers, and the lilac is a nice dusky twilight colour. So there’s my two cents! lol

    1. Thanks so much, Erin! I don’t think the tweaking will ever stop. 🙂

I love Sailor Jupiter, too. 🙂 I love them all, of course.

I love your name suggestion for the bra. Twilight garden. 🙂 I’m going to pop the suggestions in a hat and choose randomly on Sunday.

  8. Wow that’s an awesome bra! I also enjoyed Sailor Moon. Did you ever see the live action Japanese episodes? I saw the first season and was amazed at the wigs they whipped up! I’m a big Luna fan =)

    1. Thanks, Tereza! I saw the live-action version! 🙂 They did have great wigs! I’m a big Luna fan, too. It’s hard for me to actually decide a favourite. I just identify a lot with Sailor Mercury. 🙂 I want to make a cosplay outfit someday. 😀 Luna kigurumi would be awesome, too!

    1. ❤ ❤ This is why I love my husband. 😀 😀

ondafloor is going in the hat for the random pick! 😀

  9. Dang, you are getting so good at bra-making! This latest one is so pretty.

I just can’t bring myself to make “real” lingerie because I have an awesome bra store down the street and can get bras there that fit me really well, and at reasonable prices. And TBH, I’m scared of lingerie because of all the sourcing and because of how fiddly it seems! I do have two kits for the Watson bra that I haven’t used yet, but a lounge bra like that seems way less scary than a real one.

For some reason your last bra reminds me of one of those really cool sunsets where there’s a lot of pink and orange and purple, so I’d name it “desert sunset”. If you still have your gunslinger get-up from your mini honeymoon, it’ll go along perfectly, haha!

    1. Thanks so much, Nicole. 😀 I love seeing the improvement in my sewing. 🙂

Sewing the bra isn’t fiddly at all, except maybe the channeling and straps. Most things are actually really easy. Fitting is a wild adventure, though… 🙂 And sourcing the materials can be a PITA, but that’s why there are so many lovely kits out there. I’ve only started working outside of the kits, because I don’t like the matchy-matchy one-colour bras so much. Although, there are some lovely combinations out there. A lounge bra is a lot easier to sew, though. Take the plunge! I want to see your Watsons. 😀

Putting desert sunset in the hat to choose! 🙂 We didn’t take home the gunslinger outfits, but I think I can sew some up. Hur hur.

I love comments, but sometimes I may be slow to respond/approve. I will respond though. :)
