Land Acknowledgement

This website is run by Andie Wells, who lives in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

Ottawa is built on un-ceded Algonquin Anishinabe territory.

Algonquin Anishinabe Nation have lived on this territory for thousands of years. They have protected and nurtured this land before Canada existed.

I honour the people and the land of the Algonquin Anishinabe Nation just as I honour the indigenous people and the stolen land of Turtle Island. I will continue to fight for them and their place as the custodians of this land that has been colonized into what we now know as Canada.

I have been reflecting on ways I can help since I am not able to contribute financially at this time.

I commit to spreading awareness as well as contacting my representatives to ask them to make a indigenous rights plan and to search the sites of all former residential schools for graves. We must return all residential school children to their people. The last residential school closed in 1996 within very recent history. Children are still being stolen by child protective services and placed in foster homes where they aren’t able to access their culture and cannot speak in their own language. Indigenous people go missing and are murdered at a higher rate than any other people in Canada. We have poisoned their water, ruined the land surrounding theirs and made it impossible for them to exist without oppression. We must create an actual plan that supports the indigenous people of Turtle Island and raise them to their appropriate place as custodians of this land. There is no Canada without the history of colonialism. It is not a dark or distant history. It is happening now. The only way we can move forward is through a land back plan.
